This project investigates the prevalence of Complex Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (CPTSD) in the general Australian adult population and examines its association with childhood maltreatment, comorbid mental health conditions, and key risk and protective factors. As CPTSD is a relatively new diagnosis in the ICD-11, its prevalence and underlying drivers in Australia remain largely unknown.
Using a large-scale online study, we assess trauma exposure, CPTSD and PTSD symptoms, anxiety, depression, and well-being, alongside resilience and social support. This allows us to characterise how different types and timing of trauma relate to symptom profiles and mental health outcomes.
The project aims to provide the first robust estimates of CPTSD prevalence in Australia, improve understanding of its clinical presentation, and identify targets for prevention and intervention, particularly for individuals exposed to early-life trauma.
